Fellows Project Rarefied

Rarefied is developing a novel propulsion mechanism that allows lightweight platforms to stay aloft in near-space (30-100 km altitudes) using only sunlight.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The upper stratosphere and mesosphere are critical regions for collecting climate data and enabling advanced telecommunications. However, current technologies are unable to sustain long-term flight at these high altitudes, limiting data collection efforts.

Rarefied is addressing this challenge by developing platforms that use only sunlight to stay aloft in the upper atmosphere, providing a sustainable alternative to conventional space hardware. These structures use advanced materials and scalable manufacturing techniques to maintain levitation, allowing continuous operation at altitudes of 30-100 km. By eliminating the reliance on traditional propulsion systems, this technology offers a sustainable way to gather high-resolution atmospheric data and provide telecommunications services.

Rarefied’s technology has the potential to revolutionize global weather monitoring, disaster preparedness, and climate research by providing a reliable, low-carbon alternative to traditional satellites and aircrafts.
