Anthony Ku
Anthony Ku joins the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program from Clear Skies Hydrogen (CSH2) in Fremont, CA. Anthony is the Chief Executive Officer, and has worked in industrial technology development and commercialization in clean energy, materials, and sustainability for 20 years. Having previously brought products from lab to market in power generation, water treatment, and jet engines, Anthony is responsible for strategy, product, and business development for CSH2’s hydrogen refueling solutions.
CSH2 was founded to solve the “chicken-and-egg” problem of hydrogen vehicle refueling, with the ultimate goal of delivering diesel-parity cost and operating convenience to fleet operators. Starting from engineering fundamentals along with decades of industry experience, CSH2 takes a clean sheet approach to reduce cost, improve reliability, and allow fueling networks to evolve as the vehicle fleet grows in size. Through the Fellows program, CSH2 will build and field-test a prototype of its core technology to demonstrate its readiness for commercial operation.
Anthony earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Engineering Practice from MIT. He also has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, where he is currently a Non-resident Fellow at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment.
Q&A
What is your favorite word and why?
Inconceivable. For some people, it doesn’t mean what they think it means.
What is the most impactful book that you have read?
“Guns, Germs, and Steel” by Jared Diamond
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
“Sometimes, navigating bureaucracy is more about defusing vetoes than finding champions.” Said to me by someone who worked in a large Chinese state-owned-enterprise, during a conversation about the challenges of getting big things done at scale (like the energy transition) in different parts of the world.
