Brenna Boehman
Brenna Boehman joins the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program from Sinkco Labs in Brooklyn, NYC. As Chief Science Officer, she shapes the company’s innovative approach to carbon storage and development of robust monitoring, reporting, and verification. Brenna brings a decade of research experience in biogeochemistry including field work in the US, Europe, and South America studying diverse sedimentary environments.
The ocean – earth’s largest carbon sink – offers untapped potential for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Sinkco Labs has developed an efficient and safe delivery system for micro-injecting organic carbon into marine sediments. These sediments undergo compaction, a natural phenomenon that prevents microbial movement within the matrix, thus preserving the organic carbon and ensuring its permanent, environmentally safe storage. The Fellows program will provide catalytic support for Sinkco Labs’ technology innovation and their pilot storage and verification work in the Gulf of Mexico.
Brenna is passionate about environmental and climate justice, spurring her interest in the intersection of humanity and the environment. Previously she worked on projects ranging from the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, microalgae for biofuel, and paleoclimate reconstruction. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from Haverford College and a Masters of Science in Marine Microbiology from the Max Planck Institute of Marine Microbiology and University of Bremen. She earned her Doctoral Degree in Applied Ocean Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
