Lars Amsbeck

Co-CEO and CTO, HyperHeat

Lars Amsbeck joins the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program from HyperHeat in Offenburg, Germany. Lars is the technical co-founder at HyperHeat, and has extensive expertise in industrial heat and high temperature engineering. Lars worked for 20+ years at the German Aerospace Center and his first start-up, HelioHeat.

HyperHeat is developing a novel low-cost industrial heater using oxide ceramics for ultra-hot resistive heating. Their solution can be compared to a super-hot electric hair dryer that is a drop-in replacement for a natural gas burner. When powered by renewable electricity, this heater can rapidly decarbonize high-temperature (up to 2000°C) processes in industries like steel, cement and chemicals through cost-efficient retrofitting. The Fellows program will enable HyperHeat to demonstrate 2000°C heating capability for the first time.

Lars studied Energy Engineering at the University of Stuttgart and completed a PhD at RWTH Aachen. He spends his free time with his family and friends.
