Company Description

Brimstone is on a mission to decarbonize cement, which today accounts for 7.5% of global CO₂ emissions. The company has developed a breakthrough decarbonized process to produce ordinary portland cement—the cement used in virtually all construction today—and supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), both essential ingredients of concrete.

Unlike traditional cement production methods that use carbon-heavy limestone, which releases CO₂ during manufacturing, Brimstone’s process starts with a different rock—calcium silicate— that contains no embedded CO₂, while also co-producing SCM–a high-demand material used to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete. Brimstone’s deeply decarbonized cement meets existing regulatory standards for ordinary portland cement (ASTM C150) and can be used wherever conventional cement is used—paving the way to slash cement’s climate footprint. At full industrial scale, the company has optimized its process to sell its cement and SCM at competitive market prices.

Founded in 2019 by Cody Finke and Hugo Leandri, Brimstone is headquartered in West Oakland, California, where it is currently scaling up its process. The company’s solution has been recognized by the International Energy Agency, the Global Cleantech 100, and Norrsken’s Impact 100 list. Brimstone cement was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions, and Fast Company honored Brimstone as one of the Most Innovative Companies of 2023.
