Catalyst Breakthrough Energy Catalyst launches UK Request for Proposals

Seeks to fund climate technology projects

Today, Breakthrough Energy’s Catalyst program launched a Request for Proposals (RFP) to fund emerging climate technology projects located in the United Kingdom. This RFP is the next step in the UK-Catalyst partnership, which will mobilize up to £400 million between 2022 and 2027 to commercialize high-impact decarbonization technologies. Catalyst will provide project-level financing for initiatives across four areas that will reduce emissions in hard-to-decarbonize sectors:

  • Clean hydrogen
  • Direct air capture
  • Long duration energy storage
  • Sustainable aviation fuel

Catalyst will provide selected projects with one or more of the following forms of catalytic support:

  • Equity investment: minority investment into a project that will be more risk tolerant and at a lower investment rate of return than traditional equity investors
  • Grant funding: non-dilutive funds that do not require repayment to Catalyst
  • Offtake agreement: agreements that will be negotiated between Catalyst partners directly with project developers for the purchase of project output

Projects that are currently seeking governmental funding from the UK Government are particularly encouraged to apply.
