Our Team Christopher Rivest Breakthrough Energy Ventures

Chris has a particular focus on finding climate-tech companies that leverage modern technology mega-trends to accelerate the rate of development and deployment of innovative technologies and business models.

Chris has 15 years of experience across multiple hardware and software technology startups in a wide variety of fields (solar energy, cancer genomics, synthetic biology, digital media). Chris has founded three companies, served in a multitude of executive roles (CEO, COO, Board Director, VP Business Development, Head of R&D), and raised more than $70 million in venture capital from top tier investors such as Sequoia Capital.

A lover of “hard-tech”, Chris began his entrepreneurial career by founding Alion, a printed thin film solar company that grew to more than 60 people and raised more than $50 million in venture capital. Chris then went on to help found Genome Compiler (acquired by Twist Biosciences), a synthetic biology software design platform for designing synthetic organisms. Most recently, Chris served as CEO of Lifecode (acquired by Medgenome), an innovative cancer genomics company.

Chris received his Bachelors of Science from MIT in Mechanical Engineering.
