David joined Breakthrough Energy in January after a decade in political communications and public policy. As our Communications Director, David leads communications strategy across Breakthrough Energy’s entities and initiatives.
Prior to Breakthrough Energy, David served as a speechwriter, strategist, and policy advisor to public leaders from the campaign trail to the White House. Most recently, David served as the Director of Strategic Messaging for GOTV on the Biden Campaign, where he helped ensure voters knew how to make their voices heard during an election with unprecedented voting challenges. Prior to the campaign, David advised the National Immigration Law Center on its electoral strategy and spent three years as the Chief Communications Officer at New Politics, an organization that recruits military veterans and national service alumni to run for office at every level and advises them on how to build and run campaigns.
From 2015-2017, David served in the Obama White House as a speechwriter and policy advisor, where he wrote primarily for Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, oversaw messaging for the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, and advised on public engagement strategy around labor and national security issues. Prior to joining the Obama Administration, David served as the speechwriter to Senator Chris Coons of Delaware and as the press secretary and speechwriter to the late New Jersey Senator Frank R. Lautenberg.
David was born and raised in the Boston area and holds a B.A. from Carleton College, where he played baseball and studied International Relations and Political Economy. He currently lives in Washington, DC with his wife, Shira.
