Our Team Matthew Rimkunas Director, Government Relations, U.S. Policy & Advocacy

Matt brings twenty years of service in the United States Senate to Breakthrough Energy. He is the Director, Government Relations where he will help create a statutory and regulatory framework to turn Breakthrough Energy’s mission into a reality.

From 2001 through 2005, Matt served in the Office of Senator John McCain focusing on issues related to defense, foreign policy, and immigration. His work for Senator McCain gave him a deep exposure to the virtues of working in a bipartisan fashion on issues of deep importance. In 2005, Matt continued his work in the Senate by joining the Office of Senator Lindsey Graham. In Senator Graham’s office, he oversaw all the Senator’s policy and committee work, ultimately rising to become his Deputy Chief of Staff. During Matt’s time in Capitol Hill he has had the opportunity to lead major bipartisan efforts on policy related to energy and climate, immigration reform, and national security policy. Through his work in both offices, Matt developed a unique understanding of the importance of notching incremental victories while working to advance consequential legislative initiatives.

Matt graduated from the University of Delaware where he majored in Political Science. Originally from Maryland, where he resides with his wife and kids. They are avid travelers and devoted fans of the Baltimore Ravens.
